An exam-week workflow: notes, quizzes, then flashcards

Exam week fails when everything competes for attention: unread notes, half-made decks, open tabs of generic explainers, and last-minute AI chats that do not match the syllabus. More hours rarely fix that. A tight workflow does — one that forces retrieval against your own material and turns every miss into the next study block.

This playbook assumes you already have some notes. If you are starting from zero two days before the exam, skip to the triage section. If you have a messy semester archive, start with Pass 1 and be ruthless about structure before you generate anything.

The principle: retrieval first, generation second

Re-reading and regenerating summaries feel productive because they are fluent. Fluency is not memory. The highest-leverage AI uses in exam week are the ones that make you answer: quizzes, exam-style sets, and flashcards built from what you got wrong. Summaries are setup. Retrieval is the work.

Design your days around that principle. Morning: quiz. Midday: fix notes and clarify weak spots. Evening: flashcards and a shorter re-quiz. Protect sleep; tired retrieval practice teaches you that you are bad at the subject when you are mostly bad at being exhausted.

Pass 0 — Triage if time is almost gone

With 48 hours or less, do not rebuild a perfect system. List the exam topics from the syllabus or past papers. Map each topic to whatever notes you have. For topics with no notes, write a bare outline from slides or memory — ugly is fine. Then quiz only those outlines and the densest lectures. Skip decorative reorganisation.

  • Identify the top 20% of topics by exam weight
  • Attach every available note or slide dump to those topics
  • Run focused quizzes there first
  • Build flashcards only from misses on high-weight topics

Pass 1 — Get the notes in one place

Before you generate quizzes at scale, gather lectures into subjects. One subject per course. Title notes by lecture or chapter so you can scope them later. If pictures and sources matter, link them while you still recognise what they refer to.

A practical naming scheme

Prefer “W06 — Variance analysis” over “notes.” Include week numbers or lecture numbers when your faculty uses them. Add a short tag in the title for midterm vs final content if the course splits. Future-you will scope with / much faster if titles are boring and consistent.

What to fix vs what to leave

Fix missing headings, incomplete definitions, and places where you wrote “???.” Leave prose polish alone. Exam week is not the time to rewrite every lecture into essays. Clarity for retrieval beats literary notes.

Pass 2 — Quiz the gaps

Skimming feels productive; retrieval is what sticks. Scope the subject or the lectures you are weakest on, then run a quiz. Missed answers become your next study list — not a vague sense that “accounting is hard.”

How to structure quiz blocks

Work in 25–40 minute blocks. One scope per block. Write down every miss in a running “gap list” with a pointer back to the note. After the block, spend ten minutes fixing the note — add the definition you blanked on — then continue. Do not let the gap list become a second abandoned document; fold it back into the source of truth.

  • Quiz one subject at a time, not your whole semester in one pile
  • Start with weak lectures, then widen to the full subject
  • Re-quiz only the topics you missed before moving on
  • Escalate to exam-style prompts when the date is inside two weeks
  • Keep score mentally: if you miss the same idea twice, it becomes a flashcard priority

Interleaving without chaos

Alternating topics can improve discrimination — knowing when to use method A vs B. Interleave related lectures inside one subject, not unrelated courses in the same hour. Chaos across degrees burns context-switching energy you need for recall.

Pass 3 — Lock terms with flashcards

Once quizzes show which definitions and frameworks slip, generate flashcards from those notes. Short fronts, precise backs, grounded in your wording. Review on the commute; quiz again the night before. Cards are for atomic facts and pairs; keep multi-step reasoning in quiz and exam mode.

Card quality checklist

  • One idea per card — split overloaded definitions
  • Front asks for recall; back answers in course vocabulary
  • Include the exception or caveat your lecturer stressed
  • Delete or rewrite cards that are just rephrased paragraphs
  • Regenerate from the updated note after you fix a misconception

When not to use flashcards

If the exam is essay-heavy or problem-heavy, cards alone will not save you. Use them for the vocabulary and frameworks that unlock longer answers, then practise full questions with @exam or timed past papers. Flashcards are glue, not the whole building.

A sample seven-day schedule

Adjust for how many exams you have. This assumes one major exam and a usable note archive.

  • Day 7–6: organise subjects, title notes, link critical resources; light quizzes on earliest weak lectures
  • Day 5–4: systematic quizzes across all high-weight topics; build the gap list into note fixes
  • Day 3: flashcards from misses + mixed subject quiz; start one exam-style set
  • Day 2: exam-style practice in the morning; flashcard review; targeted re-quiz on remaining fails
  • Day 1: light retrieval only — short quiz, card review, sleep; no new content dumps

Keep AI on a credit budget

Notes and organisation should stay free. Spend AI on the actions that change outcomes — dense-lecture summaries when you are lost, quizzes, exam sets, and decks from misses — not on endless rephrasing of the same paragraph.   • One summary per lecture max unless the note changed substantially

Mindset checks for exam week

Anxiety pushes students toward passive tools because they feel soothing. Notice the urge to “just generate one more perfect summary.” Redirect it into one more quiz block. Also notice perfectionism in note formatting — if the note is scannable and complete enough to scope, move on.

Finally, separate understanding gaps from memory gaps. If you cannot explain an idea with the note open, you need clarification (and maybe a better capture). If you can explain it with the note open but fail with it closed, you need retrieval reps. AI should follow that diagnosis, not replace it.

The finish line

The finish line is not a perfect chat transcript. It is walking into the exam having practised on your own material — the examples, terms, and emphasis your course actually used. Organise once, quiz often, card the misses, sleep. That is the whole workflow. Everything else is decoration.
